Aaron smiled and watched Max turn back to the bacon as it sizzled and snapped. The operative agent walked up behind the beautiful blonde, being about a head taller than Max and wrapped his arms around her waist, rocking her gently from side to side to the sound of her humming. He felt her heart beat up against his and he placed a lingering kiss on top of her head. “Good morning. Whatever you’re making, smells amazing.” he greeted, his voice still a bit hoarse from the long night they had had.

Aaron washed his hands and walked over to the tiny wooden table in the kitchen, seeing that it had yet to be set. With the urge to help, Aaron walked over to the row of upper cabinets and searched for plates and cups, as soon as these were all out, the op agent placed them on the table, the smell of morning becoming more and more obvious through the room. “You’re home is beautiful.” Aaron commented, turning back over to Max, smiling at her warmly.

Max kept her eyes on the skillet, turning over the pieces of bacon and checking the eggs once. The feeling of his arms around her waist made her giggle in between her hums. It was like living in a dream, really. It was perfect. Having him there, with her, completely worry-free and happy… She turned off the heat on the skillets and nodded at Aaron. “Thanks for the help. There should be something to drink in the fridge,” she shrugged, “and there’s a radio over there, somewhere. Feel free to see if it still works.”

She glanced back at him and smirked. “Thanks. It’s not that… extravagant, or big. But it’s home.” Brushing back a strand of hair, Max moved the pans over to the table. She then proceeded to divide up the eggs and bacon and place the skillets back on the stove. Her joy eminated off of her as if she was the sun, and she sat down at the table.

Aaron smiled into the kiss and cupped her face in return, puling her deeper into their dizzying affections.

Home is Where the Heart is || Aaron & Max

bourne-without-a-legacy:

Aaron’s sleep was surprisingly peaceful, he wasn’t pulled from his slumber with the sounds of his own spoken fears or by the slight change in lighting in the room that no normal person would even notice, even in their most alert moments of consciousness. The only thing that actually woke Aaron up was his own natural cycle of wake and sleep. The operative agent sat up from the chair, his back cracking slightly and him groaned slightly as he stretched. It took a few moments for Aaron to realize that he wasn’t nervous, he wasn’t on high alter, his body was actually relaxed.

With that realization Aaron continued to stretch and hum slightly to himself, examining the room that Max called her own. Every corner of the room was filled with the essence of the beautiful blonde. It made Aaron smile at feeling as if he was totally surrounded by her. Her strength and peace, that only seemed to calm him, filled the cold space around the chased agent. When looking in the mirror, the agent quickly straightened his clothes and tried to tame his hair that had succumbed to the style of “bed-head”. Then, the smell of something cooking brought Aaron out of his deep concentration. The brown haired, blue eyed man quickly slipped out of the bedroom door and down the grand stair case. There, he followed his nose into the kitchen and was greeted by the smell of brunch and the sight of the radiant Max.

Max hummed as she prepped a few skillets. One for eggs, the other for bacon. Sure, she couldn’t cook extremely well, but she could at least cook this. Out of the fridge, she took an egg-carton and about ten slabs of bacon. She washed her hands, hovered her palms over the pans to check how hot they were, and began to crack the eggs. They sizzled and steamed as they hit the surface, the bottom turning an opaque white. After those were well on their way, the bacon was next. She set the strips down, and moments later, they snapped and sizzled, causing a small drop of grease to splatter against the flesh where her arm bent. It burned a little, but not too terribly. Then again, shedidhave a high pain tolerance.

Her eyes went to Aaron; she didn’t even notice him until then. How long had he been watching? It didn’t matter. “Good morning, sleeping beauty,” she smiled warmly, “Or, well, sortof. It’s not exactly morning anymore.” She glanced to the clock on the brick wall, which said it was a little past noon. Max shrugged, turning back to her cooking.

Aaron grinned and said playfully, “I’ll try my best, but no promises.” He turned around and winked at Max before kicking the rest stand up and they soon were flying down the road, the Baltimore harbor disappearing behind them. Aaron drove in silence, trying to calm himself from the frightening moments they had just encountered. Max was so strong, Aaron just prayed that one day they could actually go out on a date and not having it end with Max getting hurt and Aaron having little to do to stop it. Aaron slowed the bike as they approached Max’s home, the house unlit but welcoming.

She chuckled, and got onto the motorcycle behind Aaron, wrapping her arms around his torso. Thoughts raced through Max’s mind, but she drowned them out with the sound of the wind. As soon as they came to the right exits and such, Max would give the ocassional direction, and Aaron would follow. It had been quite some time, but they finally reached the house. Surrounded by trees and half-covered in ivy, the old, but structurally beautiful building looked like it belonged in a fairytale.

It was originally made by a man, the one that helped her recover from her amnesia when she first appeared in this age. After he died, she left, and only just recently had she returned. Max repaired the rickety house, and soon enough, it started to feel like a home again.

Max hopped off of the bike when it stopped, and walked over to the entrance. Feeling around her pockets, or rather — where her pockets should be — she realized that she had lost her keys when she fell into the water. “Shoot,” she muttered, before hopping down the stairs and bending by one of them, sliding out a hidden compartment that held extra keys. She held them up and they jingled as she smirked, then opened the front door to let Aaron in. “It isn’t much, but it’s… been a home to me for years. Off and on, of course, but you get the point.”

Aaron followed Max, making sure not to hover or cloud her space, he watched her search for the key and was just about ready to pick the lock when she produced another one. He smiled at her, and looked at the building, “It’s beautiful, I already love it.” For a brief moment, Aaron fantasized that a family, his family, grew up in the ivy covered walls, swinging on a swing in the front yard’s tree and learning to walk in the front room. Aaron quickly forced those images aside, he could never promise himself those kinds of memories, he could never do such a thing. He entered the house, the lights still yet to be on, but the house smelled of his old home and for once, Aaron felt a sense of peace wash over him. Every space in that home, was occupied by the essence of Max, he closed his eyes and relished in the moment, enjoying the sound of the hardwood floors creak underneath their weight.

Max watched Aaron for a moment. He seemed to relax, and when he closed his eyes, she felt her heart skip a beat. Aaron looked so calm. So frozen in time that everything in the house stood still. Max caught herself staring, and then took a gentle breath in, closing the door quietly behind her, “I’m glad you like it.” She placed the house-key on a small table that resided in the entry-way, then she turned on the lights and leaned against the banister of the stairs that led to the upper level. Boxes of different sizes and pieces of furniture with white cloths draped over them sat idly in the multiple living spaces. “I um… I’m still working on sorting everything out, so that’s why it’s a little cluttered,” she rubbed her head, her tangled hair causing her fingers to get stuck a little, “Feel free to shift things around if you feel the urge. Just be careful with the boxes. Some might contain some fragile things.” Her eyes faltered a little, and she fiddled with the necklace around her neck, which still glowed slightly. It was around two in the morning at that point, and she was starting to realize how tired she actually was. Max sat down on one of the stairs and leaned her head against the adjacent wall, her eyes fluttering shut. “Make yourself… at home..”

Aaron opened his eyes once again, he almost felt as if he had drifted off into another place entirely, a place he felt safe and at—home. It took him a while to take everything in, which was strange for him. It suddenly occurred to Aaron that this was the first time in a while that he wasn’t running off adrenaline. Max’s words then beckoned Aaron back from his deep thought and he nodded, looking at an old frame with a picture of Max when she was little. Aaron smiled at the photo and looked over at Max, who was slowly drifting off to sleep. The agent laughed quietly and bent down, picking Max up and holding her in his arms. Aaron then began to climb up the stair case, the floors creaking ever so slightly as he ascended them.

Once Aaron found Max’s room, he took off her shoes and placed her in bed, taking her necklace off and putting on the table next to her room. It was dark, so the Operative Agent couldn’t tell where everything was, but he did find a chair to sit in and Aaron, in the silence of Max’s home, listened to the songs of the night and slowly drifted off to sleep. The first restful sleep he had in a long time.

Max squirmed a little at being picked up, but she couldn’t move much. She was out. She was truly, and utterly, unconscious. Exhaustion had finally taken hold, and she couldn’t keep herself awake any longer. She didn’t dream, however. Usually, she’d have nightmares of one sort or another, but no, nothing terrifying came to her that night. As she was set upon the bed, her muscles relaxed, and she was able to get some rest.

When she woke up, she silently sat up and glanced around the room. It was at least noon, based on the shadows that creeped through the half-ivy-covered windows. Aaron was still asleep, in an adjacent chair. He looked calm. Peaceful. She hadn’t seen him sleeping before, and she didn’t want to disturb him now, so, she quietly stepped around the spots on the floor she knew wouldn’t creak and exited the room. Running a hand through her hair, she went down the stairs and into the kitchen. By the time Aaron woke up, she would have breakfast — er — brunch — ready.

bourne-without-a-legacy:

Aaron turned on the ignition of the car, and turned to her smiling, “That, my lady, is a surprise.” He slowly pulled away from the curb, the song Faithfully by Journey playing softly in the background. “I’ll give you a hint though, it has a piano.” He had never played the piano for Max before, but he planned on doing it tonight. They continued to drive, away from the city slights and the suburbs.

Max made a short pout and lowered her brows at him, “Ah, fine!” She laughed and twisted a finger around her bangs, her other hand in her lap. It was nice to have someone else drive her around. Usually, she would have to steal cars to get away from whoever happened to be tracking her down at the time. Lucky for her, she didn’t have to worry about it right now, and she wouldn’t as long as Aaron was with her. “A piano, hmm?” she made a face. She hadn’t seen or heard a piano in quite some time, and the one at the house was too far out of tune, and missing a few keys. “Sounds interesting,” she chuckled, “I can honestly say… I’m at a loss. But you know what? I…” she smiled and looked at him, “I trust you." It felt sogood to say those words… Who knew how long it had been since she allowed herself to be this vulnerable with someone. To trust them, entirely.

Aaron waited outside of Max’s home. He was wearing his best suit and holding two dozen roses in his hand. He felt a bit uncomfortable in the nice outfit, he normally wore things that were easier to fight and run in, this left him feeling a bit exposed. But tonight he was sure no one disturb them, he had made sure of it. Aaron checked his teeth in the reflection of the Dodged Challenger he had “borrowed” from his brother, Clint Barton and found that his appearance was sufficient enough. He had called Max, telling her to come outside and see the surprise he had for her.

This was Aaron’s first Valentines day with someone to spend it with and Max deserved nothing but the best. He had spent a week planning the date and willed it with all his heart that it would turn out well. Although, everything they did would be a surprise for Max. He just hoped it didn’t make her feel too uncomfortable.

The sun was still in the sky but starting to just skim the horizon, and with every passing moment, Aaron grew a bit nervous. Then, he saw her.

image

Max had spent the entire day getting ready for this, and the clock was starting to run down. She nearly scraped her skin raw, trying to be as clean and as perfect looking as she could. Her hair was pulled up into a braided, simple bun, allowing her bangs to hang loose, framing her face. She had bought some new eyeliner, mascara, and other things to look nice, just for this ocassion. It wasn’t often that she wore makeup, and it took her a few tries to get it just right.

Next, she donned a graceful, long dress that nearly touched the floor. It was a shade of red that made her features stand out, and complimented her appearance rather than overpower it. The color faded to a darker, richer scarlet towards the bottom. The dress was snug from her chest to her hips, where it gently tapered into a flowing skirt that twirled when she moved. Her nails matched the hue of the dress, and she made sure to try andnotchip them for once.

This was far out of her comfort zone, but it was worth it. Once she stepped into her heels, she was headed for the door. As Max stepped outside, the setting sun illuminated her, so much as to make her glow. She wasn’t pretty. She wasn’t beautiful. She was as radiant as the sun.

Her gaze fell to Aaron, and she stood there, silent, for a moment, caught up in the dashing looks that Aaron wore. He was handsome, and she found herself stuck, staring at him as if he was the one thing that mattered in the entire world. And honestly, that was the truth.

“Okay,” she said, snapping out of her thoughts and looking down at the ground and then back up to Aaron’s eyes, “Tell me honestly… How do I look? I feel… weird.” She laughed sheepishly, running her hands along the skirt.

image

Aaron felt many emotions rush forward when his eyes met with Max’s, joy, delight, excitement  a slight bit of nervousness, but most of all—love. He beamed, his teeth flashing in the setting sun’s rays as he watched the most beautiful girl Aaron had ever seen, walking gracefully down towards him.

It took a few moments for Aaron to catch his breath, Max’s looked radiant in her red gown, which complimented her figure and gave her enough mystery at the same time. Her make up did the same thing her dress did—complimented her features without over doing it. In Aaron’s eyes, Max looked to be the definition of perfect and her scars could barely be see, making Aaron feel as if she was really healing.

“You look….stunning.” Aaron said, longing that the English language could offer a better word, something that could describe the way Max looked and how her personality really shown through. Although Aaron was relieved that Max felt a the same way he did, a bit awkward but still happy. The operative agent pulled at his cuff nervously and then bent down to give his date a gently kiss on the cheek before offering her an arm and helping her into the car.

image

His words made her cheeks tint a slight shade of rose. It was a good feeling — having someone that truly thought she was beautiful, even with her scars and flaws. Many of them were exposed with this dress, but she didn’t care. They were part of her, now, and with Aaron’s help, she had learned to accept them. She didn’t know who she’d be without them.

She stepped towards him, welcomed the soft kiss on her face, and took his arm. Being led to her side of the car, she waited for him to open the door to slide in and pull the rest of her skirt in with her. Once he got into the car as well, she faced him and was practically beaming. “So,” she grinned, “What’s on the agenda for tonight?”
